Competitive baseball and good sportsmanship belong together. Here’s what we expect from every player, coach, parent, and spectator who takes part in Herriman Youth Baseball. We want our players to compete. We want them to play hard, improve, care about the outcome, and do everything they can within the rules to help their team succeed. But how we compete matters just as much. Herriman Youth Baseball is a youth organization, and the example set by the adults around the field has a real impact on the players. Coaches, parents, spectators, league officials, and umpires all share a responsibility for creating an environment where kids can compete and enjoy baseball. That’s the purpose of our Code of Conduct. Compete Hard. Respect the Game. Good sportsmanship doesn’t mean that winning doesn’t matter. It means competing to the best of your ability while respecting your teammates, opponents, coaches, officials, and the rules of the game. For everyone participating in Herriman Youth Baseball, that means being a positive example, demonstrating fair play, and remembering that this is ultimately a game being played by kids. Coaches have an especially important role. Winning is part of competition, but it should never come at the expense of a player’s development, character, safety, or enjoyment of the game. Respect Our Umpires and Officials Baseball includes judgment calls, close plays, and disagreements. That’s part of the game. Our umpires receive training in the rules used by Herriman Youth Baseball, which are based on National Federation of State High School (NFHS) rules rather than Major League Baseball rules. We expect players, coaches, parents, and spectators to respect their decisions. Disagreeing with a call does not give anyone permission to demean, ridicule, threaten, or verbally abuse an umpire or anyone else at the field. Keep Youth Baseball in Perspective Above everything else, the emotional and physical well-being of our players comes first. These games can be competitive, and emotions can run high. We simply ask everyone to remember who the games are for: the kids playing them. The adults around the field should be helping create an experience where players can learn how to compete, handle adversity, respect others, and enjoy baseball. Conduct That Has No Place at Our Fields Certain behavior crosses the line and may result in removal from the facility or suspension from future Herriman Youth Baseball games. This includes: Making inappropriate physical contact with a coach, umpire, Herriman Youth Baseball staff member, or spectator. Taunting or threatening players, coaches, umpires, staff, or spectators. Using profane or vulgar language or gestures. Refusing to leave the field or facility when instructed. Engaging in behavior serious enough to require law enforcement. Herriman Youth Baseball staff and league officials reserve the right to remove or suspend anyone who violates the Code of Conduct. Let’s Set the Right Example Our players are watching how the adults around them respond to wins, losses, mistakes, close calls, and difficult moments. We can have competitive baseball without losing perspective. Play hard. Cheer loudly. Support your team. Respect the opponent. Respect the officials. And help us make Herriman Youth Baseball a place where kids want to keep coming back to play.
